Windows 7 beta27 Feb 2009

I'm loving the win7 beta, but one thing that's bothered me is the lack of a taskbar option for "Never combine, hide labels". It seems you can get pretty close to the desired effect with the following trick though. Just set the taskbar setting to "Never combine" and create a new String value in the registry called

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\MinWidth

with the value "46" (without the quotes). If you're using small icons instead of large you'll likely need to use a smaller value to make things look good, but I haven't tried that at all. You'll have to at least log off to see the change.

The only possible drawback I've found is that the icon button gets a little narrower when the program is running, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing at all. The icon is 54 pixels wide before starting, but if we set the reg value to 54 then we get a few pixels of text next to the icon when running. 46 on the other hand only shows a beautiful centered icon.

Behold!

Update: it appears the icon buttons get a few pixels wider when the taskbar is full so if that happens you'll see a little text anyway. Things return to niceness once the taskbar is no longer full again though.
